Integrated Fire Detection and Suppression for High-Risk Processing Environments
Fire Shield Systems was tasked with demonstrating a fully integrated fire detection and suppression solution specifically designed for high-risk processing environments. The focus was on showcasing system performance within two critical areas of concern: the shredder infeed hopper and the outfeed conveyor.
In operations such as recycling, biomass handling, and waste-to-energy, the risk of fire ignition from sparks, friction, or hot works is ever-present. The goal of the demonstration was to provide a real-time visual representation of how the Fire Shield Systems solution can actively monitor, detect, and suppress fire risks before they escalate.
Scope Of Works
- A multi-sensor fire detection arrangement using flame, spark, and heat detection technologies.
- Strategically positioned nozzles for precise and rapid deployment of suppression media.
- A zoned water deluge system is designed to activate only where the fire is detected, preserving resources and ensuring efficiency.
- Full plant shutdown integration to immediately stop material movement, isolating the incident and minimising potential spread.

Targeted Detection and Suppression Zones
At the heart of the solution was a locally mounted pump application unit, directly supplying water from a 5,000 litre bulk tank located adjacent to the demonstration area. This design ensures a fast and reliable supply of suppression media, reducing the delay between detection and response.
The system was designed with proximity and hazard-specific performance in mind. Every detection zone corresponds with a designated suppression zone, allowing targeted fire control.
Key Benefits
- Rapid Multi-Sensor Detection: The combined use of spark and ember detection
sensors for fire identification at various ignition stages. - Automated System Activation: Full automation from detection through to suppression means immediate reaction.
- Zoned Suppression: Only the affected area is flooded, reducing water usage and collateral impact on the surrounding areas.
- Reduced Response Time: Proximity-based system allows for faster activation and mitigation compared to traditional systems.
Ideal Use Cases
The solution is specifically engineered for high-risk environments where early-stage fire risk is significant due to high friction, material build-up, or constant operational heat. Sectors include:
- Recycling and materials recovery facilities
- Biomass processing plants
- Waste-to-energy operations
- Any conveyor-fed machinery with ignition-prone material flow
Outcome
Our demonstration video exhibits Fire Shield Systems’ capability to deliver a tailored, responsive, and effective fire mitigation solution. The combination of automation, multi-point detection, and efficient water management represents a significant improvement in fire safety for processing operations.
Fire Shield Systems continues to develop and refine bespoke fire suppression and detection systems, with a strong focus on protecting people, assets, and productivity in the most challenging industrial environments. The demonstration featured the installation and live operation of an automated suppression system, engineered to identify and neutralise fire threats across key process zones rapidly. The setup included:
- A multi-sensor fire detection arrangement using flame, spark, and heat detection technologies.
- Strategically positioned nozzles for precise and rapid deployment of suppression media.
- A zoned water deluge system is designed to activate only where the fire is detected, preserving resources and ensuring efficiency.
Full plant shutdown integration to immediately stop material movement, isolating the incident and minimising potential spread.
